Imbube is the Zulu word for lion. These majestic animals can be viewed not far outside of Johannesburg at the Lion Park. We visited on a beautifully warm and sunwashed day. There are four prides of lions resident, as well as lion cubs having afternoon naps. I am always amazed at the size of their giant paws.

Emmarentia
Close to the centre of Johannesburg is a small dam called Emmarentia adjoining Botanical Gardens. Ducks and water birds, wide open spaces and large trees make one feel far away from the city. People walk their dogs and picnic here, and bask in the sun on warm days.

Tswaing Crater
We took the hour's drive North of Johannesburg to the Tswaing Crater - a small nature reserve surrounding a sunken dam that was created by an asteroid's crash landing. We enjoyed the easy walk around the crater rim. I loved the bright green umbrella thorn trees and the feeling of space. An interesting day trip for those interested in Geography and bird watching. Oh, and avoid taking shortcuts - this invloves removing little seeds that will get attached to all your clothing...

Diamond in the Rough
We took the train to the mining village of Cullinan a few weekends ago... this quaint little place is where the world's largest diamond, the 'Star of Africa' was discovered. With turn of the century houses that are now little restaurants, antique and décor shops and art galleries it has plenty of charm. The mine is still operational, and the mine head is visible close to the village.
Here is one of the small churches in Cullinan - this one was designed by Sir Herbert Baker.

Irene Dairy
I have many happy childhood memories of going to the dairy... my mum would drive down with buckets in the boot, and we would visit the calves, watch the cows being milked, and walk past fields of long grass where lazy grazing slowed the afternoon.
I recently visited a lovely dairy in Pretoria and spent a happy morning with the cows:) I came home with fresh farm milk and thick cream, which was delicious with scones, pear preserve and tea.

At the heart of it
It's easy to focus on differences. Sometimes the differences are in the way we do the same things.
